From the very start of her career as a scientist, Charmaine has been passionate about the power of research to save and improve people's lives. Charmaine did her PhD and postdoctoral research in Neuroscience at University College London and, since leaving the laboratory in 2003, has held leadership roles in pioneering health and research organisations such as the British Heart Foundation and Institute of Cancer Research, been a Governor at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Trustee at Brain Research UK.
Since February 2020 Charmaine has been Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation - the UK's largest independent funder of cardiovascular disease research and nation's heart charity. She also holds roles including as Chair of the Cranfield Trust, Board Member of the European Heart Network, and Chair of the Global Cardiovascular Funders Forum.
