Sheffield Hallam University’s Facilities Directorate (FD) delivers services to maintain the university’s campuses to a high standard. Its Charitable Giving programme is a major staff-led scheme, engaging nearly 600 colleagues across the directorate. A multidisciplinary volunteer staff led charity board selected a small local independent charity, Cavendish Cancer Care that supports cancer patients and their families as their partner. The rationale for this decision was to create the biggest impact possible on the community within which our staff live and work. The charity boards goal was to generate funds for an organization which only receives 5% statutory funding and raise awareness of the charities work and provide in kind support and expertise to improve the charities fundraising and service delivery operations.
Staff from across the whole directorate undertook a wide variety of fundraising initiatives delivering 57 events and challenges over an 18 period to raise £37,000. As well as traditional fundraising events such as bake sales and raffles taking place directorate wide across 3 university campuses, staff also challenged themselves to go outside their comfort zones. Individuals also undertook their own personal challenges such as a year of sobriety, jumping out of planes, a 224 mile cycle ride and abseiling off a 12 story building! The directorate is proud to have made a difference to our charity donating funds to fully support 96 people through the Cavendish service. Each one of those people will receive an individualized package of complementary care and support to help them deal with the psychological and physical effects that a cancer diagnosis has on them and their family
