What is the partnership?
Marsh & McLennan Companies, a professional services firm comprising four companies, chose the British Red Cross to be its charity partner for 18 months until the end of December 2015. The international aid charity was chosen because its aims aligned with MMC’s corporate social responsibility theme of disaster preparedness and recovery. The partnership was established to support people facing crises in the UK and to enable MMC employees to use their time and skills to benefit their community.
What did the company do?
It created a network of 98 Charity Champions across the UK to encourage staff to take part in fundraising events. Senior figures in the organisation, including the chairman and chief executives of its different companies, also got involved in the development of the partnership and in overseeing key objectives. A total of £20,000 was invested by MMC to support volunteering and £15,000 was made available for events and to cover fundraising costs. The partnership was promoted internally in a variety of ways, including poster campaigns and monthly impact updates. Staff also held clothing and food collections in support of BRC projects.
Why did it win?
The partnership raised more than £300,000 to help buy emergency response equipment, which will help BRC to respond more effectively to crises. More than 500 MMC employees took part in volunteering initiatives, collectively contributing almost 4,000 hours. More than 430 MMC staff received first-aid training, which will help them to respond to emergencies in their communities.
