Despite never having attempted a charity partnership of this scale, Wolseley UK embarked on a gruelling endurance challenge which saw two teams travel to Canada to take on the 444-mile Yukon River Quest race in voyageur canoes and set themselves an ambitious fundraising target of £100,000.
By uniting 6,000+ staff across the business, 100+ suppliers and customers behind a cause staff felt passionate about, they were able to smash their fundraising target, raising £148,000 – and incredible £48,000 over their target. They chose to restrict their donation to translational research in aid of Stand Up to Cancer and their amazing contribution is enough to cover the cost of an entire clinical trial that is combining radiotherapy and immunotherapy to help beat cancer.
Wolseley UK were supported every step of the way by Cancer Research UK, including working together to provide a programme of health awareness activity for their staff – something they had never offered before. Positive feedback about the interactive activities, which included a virtual reality lab experience, has left Wolseley keen to continue supporting staff in this way and, though the partnership is now complete, Cancer Research UK continue to work closely with Wolseley UK to support their health awareness activity.
