We Listen

Biography

Rail suicides have devastating impact, particularly on train drivers, rail employees and witnesses, as well as the family and friends of the deceased. Samaritans have been working in partnership with the rail industry since 2010 to decrease the number of suicides on the railways and to improve support for people affected by them.

In February 2016, Samaritans and the rail industry launched a new campaign, ‘We Listen’, reaching millions of people who travel across the rail network. The aim of the campaign is to encourage those most at risk to seek help whenever they are struggling to cope and increase the likelihood of them calling Samaritans’ free helpline number, 116 123.

Through its striking imagery and hidden messaging, the campaign is helping to raise awareness and increase understanding of Samaritans so that people see contacting Samaritans as a positive, empowering first step in seeking help and taking control of their lives. By encouraging people to seek help when they are struggling to cope, the ‘We Listen’ campaign contributed to an 11% fall in rail suicide rates in 2016.
