Who is the winner?
Matt Smith is a partner in Deloitte’s financial advisory practice and specialises in restructuring. He has worked for Deloitte for more than eight years.
What did he do?
Smith is the driving force behind Deloitte’s most ambitious fundraising challenge to date: its four-continent challenge. After becoming corporate responsibility partner in the financial advisory practice in 2014, Smith was inspired to develop and launch this company-wide challenge, which involves climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, trekking in Borneo, mounting Mulhacen, the highest mountain in continental Spain, and reaching the summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador. The goal was to raise £1m for Deloitte’s charity partners: the Alzheimer’s Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK.
Over 18 months, Smith brought together a team of 14 volunteers to project-manage the events, organised three company-wide fundraising events, obtained media coverage and provided support to the participants, while also training and securing sponsorship for his place on two of the trips. Smith was also vital in obtaining support for the challenge from senior levels in the company.
Why did he win?
The 2015 challenge raised £1,062,271 for the charity partners and involved more than 600 people. None of this would have happened without Smith’s determination and leadership. Since joining the firm, Smith has championed and led fundraising initiatives that have raised more than £1.5m. He has also led and participated in volunteering programmes such as a mentoring scheme at the Maria Fidelis School in Camden, London.
