We are facing a diabetes crisis. An estimated 4.5 million people are living with diabetes in the UK. To safely manage their condition and live well, people with diabetes need support from their healthcare teams. But around 60% of people with Type 1 diabetes and 40% of people with Type 2 diabetes do not get the checks they need to avoid devastating complications such as heart disease, blindness and amputations.
The Clinical Champions Programme was developed in partnership between Diabetes UK and Novo Nordisk. By empowering healthcare professionals to lead improvements in local diabetes care, the programme aims to transform the quality of and access to diabetes care at a local and national level.
The Clinical Champions Programme is a unique opportunity for clinicians to develop the skills they need to effectively influence care improvement, through world-leading Executive Education at Ashridge International Business School. These skills have helped 45 clinicians to deliver system-wide projects to improve local diabetes care to date.
The programme is fully funded by Novo Nordisk. Diabetes UK oversee programme delivery.
The first Clinical Champions programme concluded in 2016. The results demonstrate the ability of clinicians to transform local care when given the right support.
