How does the team work?
Having faced a significant cut in headcount in recent years, Aviva’s Group and UK CSR team needed to collaborate more closely than ever before to succeed. With team members based at four UK locations, this was no mean feat. The Aviva Group team reports to Will McDonald, the corporate responsibility director at the Aviva Group, and the Aviva UK team is overseen by Henny Flynn, head of corporate responsibility for Aviva UK.
What did the team do?
The team was set up to generate pride in Aviva’s employees and earn the trust of its customers. To achieve this, it launched a three-year strategic partnership with the British Red Cross. Work included engaging 1,000 employees across 13 markets to help map disaster-stricken areas so that aid could be delivered more effectively.
The UK Aviva Community Fund, from which local community groups are awarded money for their project ideas, was delivered on a group-run digital platform in the UK. In 2016, the Fund received 4,000 project submissions, a 20 per cent increase from 2015, and more than five million votes were placed (an increase of 21 per cent from 2015).
Why did it win?
The team’s hard work and collaboration has resulted in 84 per cent of Aviva employees believing that Aviva is a good corporate citizen, nine percentage points above the industry benchmark. These employees were 59 per cent more likely to be proud to work for Aviva. UK employee engagement in community activities has risen from 39.2 per cent in 2015 to 43.9 per cent in 2016.
