For an outstanding partnership between a company in the professional services sector and a UK charity
What is the partnership?
The training company OC&C partnered with the LGBT+ charity Just Like Us to deliver the Relatable Role Model Programme. This initiative trains LGBT+ students to give talks to schools that champion equality and challenge prejudice. What did the company do?
The partnership developed a training programme to help students maximise the impact of their school talks and equip them with the skills and confidence needed to move from education to employment.
Students first take part in a workshop delivered by Just Like Us, then receive public speaking training, delivered by OC&C’s LGBT+ Network. OC&C also provides informal opportunities for students to learn about life as an openly LGBT+ employee, while building their professional networks. The pilot programme took place in Oxford in June 2016. After the model was refined in response to feedback from volunteers, OC&C and JLU worked together to deliver the programme to a further 60 ambassadors in Cardiff, Bristol, Oxford and London. Why did it win?
OC&C helped Just Like Us make a significant impact on more than 12,000 secondary school pupils: 85 per cent say they are less likely to be homophobic in their words or actions, and 86 per cent say they understand what they can do to support their LGBT+ friends. OC&C has been able to improve its own diversity, with a 60 per cent increase in the number of openly LGBT+ applicants applying to work at the company.
