For an outstanding partnership between a company in the legal sector and a UK charity
What is the partnership?
The law firm Hogan Lovells chose London’s Air Ambulance as its local charity of the year in 2014, helping the organisation to purchase a much-needed second helicopter and contributing to fundraising efforts. The partnership was planned to last for two years, but thanks to overwhelming support from Hogan Lowells employees it was extended for a third year.
What did the company do?
Hogan Lovells’ aircraft finance practice carried out on a pro-bono basis all the legal work involved in purchasing the helicopter. The team was also heavily involved in the worldwide hunt for a suitable second-hand helicopter, overseeing complex negotiations and advising on loans and financing. This saved the charity more than £77,000 and made sure the second helicopter was up and running as soon as possible.
Employees also contributed hugely towards the charity’s fundraising efforts with their own events and awareness campaigns, raising £100,000 through their charitable giving programme during 2016 alone. Events included quiz nights, wine tastings, ballroom dancing competitions and sponsored runs, walks and abseils.
Why did it win?
Staff at the law firm raised £177,517 over three years. Thanks to the second helicopter, downtime for London’s Air Ambulance aircraft was reduced to just five days in a year. For seriously injured people this increased aircraft coverage is vital.
