Challenge Event of the Year
Deloittewith Alzheimer's Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK for Deloitte Charity Challenge 2015
What was the project?
Deloitte staff braved earthquakes and threatened volcanic eruptions to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK after the organisations were voted as the accountancy firm’s charity partners. The aim was to raise £1m by encouraging staff to take part in a four-continent challenge. As well as raising money, Deloitte wanted to engage staff and raise awareness of the charities.
What did the company do?
The simultaneous four-continent challenge consisted of staff members climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, a trek, cycle and rafting challenge in Borneo, climbing Mulhacen, the highest peak in Spain, and reaching the summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador. A working group of 14 volunteers developed the challenges over 18 months. A total of 239 staff members from 17 offices took part in the challenges, including both junior staff members and senior executives. At home, 70 knitters volunteered 1,700 hours to make hats for those taking part in the challenges. These were sold to raise money. Four hundred partners donated an hour of their salaries, raising more than £148,000. Deloitte also contributed more than £250,000 through match funding.
Why did Deloitte win?
The events raised £1,062,271 for charity and engaged more than 600 people from across the business. More than 10,300 sponsors supported the challengers, while 88 per cent of colleagues said taking part had increased their awareness of the charities involved.
