Global Charity Partnership

Biography

In October 2016, A&O concluded a two-year charity partnership with Amref Health Africa to reduce teenage pregnancy rates by educating young people in rural Tanzania about sexual and reproductive health.

Tanzania has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in the world, with teenage girls permanently expelled from school if they become pregnant. 5,000 girls every year are denied an education, meaning their cycle of extreme poverty continues.

Through extensive pro bono support and a record-breaking global fundraising campaign across 40 offices, A&O has contributed £1.72m to Amref, enabling it to train hundreds of teachers, peer educators and health care workers, as well as set up youth-friendly health facilities, across two remote regions of Tanzania. Through these, they will reach more than 170,000 young people with sexual and reproductive health education. Amref expects to see teenage pregnancy rates fall within the next few years.

A&O has also supported Amref by delivering the largest ever pro bono project for a global charity partner. A team of 30 people from six offices spent 850 hours helping Amref build its legal advocacy skills to campaign effectively for change in sexual and reproductive health across Tanzania ensuring the impact of the partnership is sustainable and scalable into the future.
